Musical Odyssey

hawaii

In the world of music, there are those who simply play, and then there are those like Dave Polo, whose life is an embodiment of musical passion and diversity. Born in the vibrant landscapes of Hawaii in 1982, David Polo's journey into the realm of melody began at a tender age, enriched by the vibrant rhythms of family gatherings. At the age of six, he strummed his first notes on the ukulele, setting the stage for a remarkable musical expedition.

Dave Polo

Musical Multiverse

Polo's musical appetite grew voraciously. In school, after school, and everywhere in between, he embraced the world of instruments – violin, bass guitar, flutes, trumpets, keyboards, drums, and even traditional Hawaiian instruments, all danced under his fingertips. Not content with mere performance, he delved into the intricate language of music, becoming well-versed in reading and writing music during his time at the Waldorf School on the island of Kauai.

Kahuku High school, on the North Shore of Oahu, ushered in the clarinet, the trumpet, and the guitar, a love affair that would define his future. At the age of 14, Polo's father gifted him his first guitar, a moment that ignited an unquenchable passion.

A Life in Song

A brief hiatus during college couldn't stifle the music coursing through his veins. Firefighting may have been his profession for a time, but the pull of music proved irresistible. In 2005, he birthed the musical entity known as "Sage." Their journey began with a triumphant musical premiere in San Francisco's historic Boom Boom Room, followed by a soulful pilgrimage through the Fillmore District. The band's unique sound, powered by two ukulele virtuosos, upright bass, and a drummer, electrified audiences. It blended Hawaiian vibes with reggae, wrapped in harmonies that soared, driven by the ukulele and grounded by rockabilly-style drum and bass.

Island Serenades

Sage's musical odyssey carried them back to the Hawaiian islands in 2007, where they serenaded historic Chinatown and downtown Waikiki. They breathed life into family gatherings and local gigs, amassing a devoted following. Returning to the Bay Area, they embarked on a West Coast tour that extended to the tropical shores of Hawaii.

Recording Stardom
2009 saw a momentous collaboration with Grammy award-winning producer Keith Olsen, culminating in the release of their second album. Radio waves in California and Hawaii carried their harmonies far and wide.

Solo Pursuits

By 2013, Sage had run its course, but for David Polo, the adventure had only just begun. He set out on a globe-trotting musical escapade, landing in Patagonia, Chile, where he crafted his solo album, "Just a Dream." Three years of traveling South America and the world transformed him.

The Speakeasy Collective

2016 marked the album's release, as Polo returned to California to tour and promote his creation. He simultaneously unveiled a new project, "The Speakeasy Collective," teaming up with DJs Emanuel Skinner and DJ O-Matic. This trio fused deep house with acoustic instruments, a sonic voyage designed for dance and deep introspection. Four singles, including the chart-topping "Searider Remix," adorned their repertoire.

A Grand Return

In 2018, after over a decade in the limelight, David Polo took a step back, seeking a well-deserved hiatus. But 2023 marks his return with a fourth album, "Unbound." Recorded in Chile at Los Lobos Records and produced by the legendary Jamie Morris, this album promises an electrifying, sonic odyssey.

Musical Collaborations

In 2018, I had the opportunity to work with Jamie Morris on another project with Jason Glavis on the single "The Lies," a ukulele, dubstep reggae fusion that sounded incredible.

Musical Roots

David Polo's musical DNA is a complex weave. Hawaiian culture and local legends like Israel Kamakawiwo'ole and John Cruz laid its foundation. Yet, it was a diverse musical diet that shaped him – R&B, reggae, hip-hop, sublime, and the rebellious energy of Rage Against the Machine. He harbors a deep love for classical and Spanish guitar, inspired by artists like Jesse Cook.

But it's his mastery of the ukulele that sets him apart. A lifetime of tinkering and customization, decades of trial and error, have refined this humble instrument into a custom work of art. Each string, each curve, each note, a testament to dedication and artistry.

Musical Experience

David Polo's performances are more than music; they're an invitation to a state of bliss. His ukulele's soft notes and soaring harmonies, bolstered by driving beats and deep bass, become an infectious, feel-good journey. It's a sonic soiree where smiles are infectious, and bodies sway in uninhibited dance

The Unbound Return

With "Unbound," David R. Polo emerges from his hiatus, poised to take us on a new adventure. As the music world waits in eager anticipation, we can't help but wonder what sonic landscapes this musical maestro will explore next.

In the ever-evolving tapestry of music, David R. Polo is an artist unbound.
